About USA Fish Stores

USA Fish Stores is an independent directory of aquarium and fish stores across the United States. We built it because most "best of" lists for local businesses are either scraped from a single review platform with no editorial judgment, or quietly pay-to-play with no disclosure. We wanted neither.

How we research a listing

For every state we cover, we search for independently-owned aquarium and fish stores — not corporate chains — using public sources: store websites, Google Business listings, Yelp, local news coverage, and hobbyist forum and community discussion. We only publish a store once we've found independent evidence it's a real, currently-operating business. Every write-up on this site is written in our own words; we don't copy descriptions from other directories or from the stores themselves.

A state's "Top 10" ranking reflects our editorial judgment about that state's independent aquarium retail scene at the time we researched it, based on specialization, reputation signals we found during research, and overall quality. Where we cite a public rating (like a Google review score), we always name the source and the date we checked it — we never publish a rating we made up ourselves.

Store data is reviewed on a quarterly cycle: an automated check flags listings whose website has gone dark or whose information hasn't been reverified in a while, and a human does the actual re-research before anything changes. We do not auto-publish scraped updates.

Disclosure

USA Fish Stores and Amazonia Tropical Fish LLC (amazoniafish.com), an online retailer based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, share a common operator. Wherever Amazonia Tropical Fish appears on this site — in the national "Top 10 USA" section and on the Pennsylvania state page — it is labeled"Featured Partner" and is not part of the organic, unaffiliated ranking. Every other listing on every "Top 10" list on this site, in every state and nationally, is unaffiliated and organically researched with no payment or ownership relationship involved.

Separately, store owners can pay for our VIP program ($100/month) to appear as a labeled "VIP Editor's Pick" on their state page. VIP status never removes or displaces the organic Top 10 — it's an additional, clearly marked placement, and it's open to any independent store regardless of whether they made our organic ranking.
