How Often You Should Actually Change Aquarium Water

Ask five fishkeepers how often they change water and you’ll get five different answers, and honestly, they might all be right. The “10% a week, no matter what” rule gets repeated so often that it’s started to sound like law, but it’s really just a starting point that got frozen in place. A heavily stocked 20-gallon with a couple of goldfish and a sparsely stocked 55-gallon planted tank do not have the same needs, and treating them the same is how good tanks turn mediocre and mediocre tanks turn into algae farms.

Here’s a more honest way to think about it.

Why We Change Water At All

The nitrogen cycle gets most of the credit here, and fairly so. Fish waste, uneaten food, and decaying plant matter break down into ammonia, which beneficial bacteria convert to nitrite, then to nitrate. Ammonia and nitrite are acutely toxic even in small amounts; nitrate is far less dangerous but still builds up over time and stresses fish at high concentrations. Water changes are the main way to export that nitrate, since a healthy biofilter doesn’t remove it on its own (only live plants and specific anaerobic setups meaningfully consume it).

But nitrate isn’t the whole story. Water changes also replenish minerals that buffer pH and support fish physiology (general hardness and carbonate hardness get depleted over time), dilute dissolved organic compounds that tint water yellow and stress fish even when your test kit looks fine, and reset trace elements that plants and inverts pull out of solution. A tank can have “zero nitrate” on a test strip and still badly need a water change.

The Myths Worth Retiring

“A cycled tank doesn’t need water changes.” Cycling just means you have bacteria to handle ammonia and nitrite. It does nothing about nitrate, mineral depletion, or organic buildup. Cycled tanks still need changes.

“Bigger tanks don’t need them as often.” Volume buys you dilution and slower swings, not immunity. A lightly stocked large tank can stretch its schedule; a heavily stocked large tank often needs just as much attention as a small one, just with more water moved per change.

“Water changes stress fish, so less is better.” Poorly executed water changes (huge temperature swings, no dechlorinator, dumping in water too fast) absolutely stress fish. Water changes done properly, at reasonable volumes and matched temperature, are far less stressful than living in water loaded with nitrate and dissolved organics.

“Plants mean you can basically skip water changes.” Fast-growing plants are genuinely good at consuming nitrate and can let you stretch the interval, especially in low-bioload setups. But they don’t replace GH/KH replenishment or organic export entirely, and a heavily stocked planted tank still needs regular changes.

What Actually Sets the Schedule

Four things matter more than any fixed number: how many fish you have relative to tank volume, how much and how often you feed, how strong your filtration and plant mass are, and how sensitive your species are to water quality (soft-water species like wild-caught tetras and Corydoras tend to be less forgiving than hardy livebearers).

A Realistic Schedule By Tank Type

Think of these as starting points to adjust with testing, not commandments:

  • New tank, fishless cycling: No changes needed until the cycle is established, since there are no fish to protect.
  • New tank, fish-in cycling: Frequent, smaller changes (often every 1-2 days) to keep ammonia and nitrite from reaching harmful levels while the bacteria colony establishes.
  • Average community tank, moderate stocking: Roughly 20-30% weekly is a reasonable default for most home aquariums with standard filtration.
  • Heavily stocked or heavy-feeding tanks (goldfish, messy cichlids, big predatory fish): 30-50% weekly, sometimes split into two smaller changes rather than one large one.
  • Lightly stocked, densely planted tanks: Every 1-2 weeks can work if nitrate stays low and growth is strong, but don’t stretch it indefinitely.
  • Nano tanks under 10 gallons: Small water volumes swing fast. Smaller, more frequent changes (twice weekly) usually beat one big weekly change.
  • Quarantine or hospital tanks: Often daily or every other day, since there’s usually no substrate or plant mass to buffer anything.
  • Saltwater reef tanks: Typically 10-20% every one to two weeks, adjusted for bioload and skimmer performance; consistency matters more here than raw frequency.

How to Tell You’re Overdue

A liquid test kit for nitrate, GH, and KH tells you more than any calendar. If nitrate is climbing past the 20-40 ppm range before your next scheduled change, move the date up. Cloudy or yellow-tinted water, increased algae, or fish looking listless without an obvious disease cause are all signs worth investigating with a water change, not just a shrug.

Doing It Right

Match the temperature of new water to the tank, always use a dechlorinator, and avoid changing more than about 50% at once in an established tank except in an emergency, since a big sudden shift in chemistry can stress fish and shock beneficial bacteria more than the nitrate ever would. If a tank has been badly neglected, resist the urge to do one giant change to “fix” it. Several smaller changes over a week or two are gentler than one dramatic overhaul.

FAQ

Do I need a water change if my nitrate reads zero? Not urgently for nitrate specifically, but zero nitrate doesn’t mean the water is otherwise fine. Minerals get depleted and organic compounds build up even when nitrate is low, especially in heavily planted tanks. A less frequent change is still worth keeping on the calendar.

Can I just top off evaporated water instead of changing it? No. Topping off replaces water that left as pure vapor, so everything dissolved in the tank (nitrate, minerals, organics) stays behind and gets more concentrated, not less. Top-offs and water changes solve different problems.

Is it possible to change water too often? Yes, in a couple of ways. Very frequent large changes can make it hard for fish to adjust to constantly shifting chemistry, and can also slow beneficial bacteria colonization in a new tank. For most established tanks, though, under-changing is a far more common problem than over-changing.

How much should I change at once? For a routine maintenance change on an established tank, 20-30% is a common, safe range. Go higher only when nitrate or other parameters are clearly elevated, and even then, stick to smaller, more frequent changes rather than one huge swing if the tank has been neglected for a while.
